At Santa Monica Montessori School, our primary goal for the child is to cultivate their own natural desire to learn. This is approached two ways in the classroom. Dr. Montessori always emphasized that the hand is the chief teacher of the child. In order to learn how to concentrate, the best solution is to fix the attention of the child on a task performed by their hands. All equipment in a Montessori classroom allows a child to use their hands throughout the learning process. This tactile and kinesthetic system of learning permanently reinforces the skill to be learned. Muscular memory is a strong tool in the learning process.

From the Director:
We are excited to welcome you and your children to the 2019-2020 School Year! We have enjoyed seeing some of you throughout the summer sessions, which included our popular water days, science visitor, several animal visitors, and oodles of fun crafts.
After our busy summer session we were closed for a week in order to prepare ourselves and the classrooms for the new school year. Over the summer some of the rooms received a fresh coat of paint as well as some updated flooring, along with new materials and layouts in order to provide our students with a beautiful environment to grow and learn!
If you did not get around to purchasing one of our 2018-2019 yearbooks we have some copies left for purchase at the front desk.
We are also updating our website with the 2019-2020 calendar, as well as important dates to keep in mind. The website will continue updating throughout the year, in order to add another method of informing you as to what is happening at SMMS.
Finally, we would like to extend a heartfelt invitation to all the parents to join us for our
BACK TO SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE, Wednesday September 11, 2019 from 3:00-4:30. The open house is a great opportunity to explore your child’s new environment and get to know your teacher.

Class starts promptly at 8:30 every day. It is very important that all children arrive on time and maintain a regular attendance schedule. Coming late or missing school hinders your child’s academic and social progress as well as disrupts the classroom. Absences, late starts or early pick-up needs to be reported through email, firstname.lastname@example.org or calling the front desk at (310) 829-3551.
Every student needs to be signed in at the beginning of the day and signed out when he/she leaves the school. The binders with the sign in are located in the lobby or at the back gate. Your child’s name will be on a monthly page. Licensing requires every parent to sign in with a full signature that is clear and legible including date and time.
STUDENT DROP OFF
The driveway in front of the school may only be used for quick drop-off or pick-up of a student. All cars should enter from Colorado and exit on 19th street. For a longer visit, or school event, please use street parking, or meters. Do Not Park in the driveway in such a way that it blocks other cars from entering the driveway. The rear gate in the alley is a safe place for drop off and pick up. The gate is open from 8:00-8:30 in the AM and 3:00-3:15 PM. A staff member will meet you with sign- in/out book and take the child to their class. Please do not use any emergency exits, nor any parking in the back which is assigned to staff.
STUDENT PICK UP
Please be as prompt as possible when picking up at front or in the alley. We ask that you do not block our neighbor’s driveways in the alley while waiting for your child. To encourage a smooth and timely departure we ask for all adults not to linger in the playground area nor lobby.
We have found the best way to transition, or to say, “goodbye”, for parents and children alike is to give a warm hug and assure your child that you will be back soon. The goodbye should not exceed two to three minutes. We encourage you to say those goodbyes at the door and let your child enter the room independently to put their things away and begin the day. If your child is having difficulty we will call and notify you as soon as possible.
SNACK/ HOT LUNCH
Snack is provided every day for children that want it. Children may also pack their own snack. Children may also pack their lunch or sign –up for hot lunch. Unfortunately, staff is not able to heat any food. Each lunch container should be labeled with the child’s name. The hot lunch can be ordered by going to TOTPOT.BOONLI.com, our code is,”westside12”. You will need to set up an account and then you can order for the first day.
Children may not attend school with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or when experiencing any highly contagious condition. Cooperation in this area is a must for protection for all students and staff. A child may not attend school for at least 24 hours after last symptom occurred.
Statements will be available by the first of the month. Tuition may be paid annually, semi-annually, and monthly. You may pay by check, credit card, cash, or bank wire. You may drop off payment at the Front desk or call in by phone. Families may also leave a credit card on file to be billed automatically monthly.
