From the Director:

February 8, 2018

Dear Parents,

We are pleased to invite you to enroll your child for the 2018-2019 school year.

This year we are very pleased to announce that our “Erdkinder” students will continue with classes through 8th grade.  The goal of Erdkinder is to produce adults who are equipped with confidence in themselves and with knowledge and life skills to become productive world citizens. Our students will study Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, English, History, Geography, World Cultures, Civics, Economy, Nutrition, Food Preparation, Physical Education, Music, Art and Design. Working collaboratively, the students will be prepared for universities and workplaces.  We will create a community where “softer” skills like leadership, collaboration, creativity, empathy and exploration are cultivated by design and intention. If you would like further information about the program, please let us know.

As many of you know, the Montessori environment is designed as a three-year program. The classes have an overlapping age allowance that caters to each individual child’s personal growth and development. Students are moved to the next class when their maturation calls for this change. This may occur during the school year and not necessarily when the school year begins. It is most beneficial for your child to complete the three-year cycle in the Montessori program. If you have questions about the program or class placement, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your support of your child’s education at Santa Monica Montessori School. The 2018-2019 School Year will begin on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

Regards,

Dr. Ivy Sinjur, Head of School
Lynn Hayward, Director
Pamela J. Crisman, Executive Director

School Hours
Monday-Friday
8:30 am – 12 pm (half day)
8:30 am – 3 pm (school day)
8:30 am – 6 pm (extended day)

Class starts promptly at 8:30 am every day. It is very important that all children arrive on time and maintain a regular attendance schedule. Coming late or missing school hinders your child’s academic and social progress as well as disrupts the classroom. Absences, late starts, or early pick-ups need to be reported to the office at 310-829-3551.

Signing In and Out
Every student needs to be signed in at the beginning of the day and signed out when he/she leaves the school. The binders with the sign-in/sign-out sheets for every child can be found on the sign-in/sign-out table to the right of the front desk. Licensing requires every parent to sign in with a full signature that is clear and legible.

Saying Goodbye
Transitioning for a child can be difficult, especially if it is for the first time. We have found the least painful way to say “goodbye,” for parents and children alike, is to give a warm hug and assure your child that you will be back soon. Your good-bye should not exceed more than one or two minutes. The teachers will assist you by redirecting them into a fun activity or classroom work.

Student Drop-Off
The driveway in front of the school may only be used for quick drop-off or pick-up of a student. All cars should enter from Colorado Ave. and exit on 19th Street. For longer visits, please park on the street. Do not park in the driveway in such a way that blocks other cars from entering the driveway.

The rear entrance in the alley is also a safe place for drop-off or pick-up. Every day from 8:00 am to 8:30 am and from 3:00 pm to 3:15 pm there will be a monitor attending the gate to receive or release children. Please do not use the emergency exits because the front security door and the rear door to the alley are the only ways to drop-off and pick-up students. All parking spots behind the school building and the marked parking spots in the driveway are reserved for teachers and staff.

Student Pick-Up
Please try and be prompt when picking up your child. When you arrive in the classroom, let your child know that it is now time to leave. Give them a few minutes to complete their present task and clean up after themselves, but do not let them start something new. To expedite a smooth departure, we ask for all adults not to linger in the playground area or to let the child continue to play. If a longer enrollment is desired, please contact admissions to make the arrangement.

Lunch
The students at Santa Monica Montessori School may choose to bring lunch from home or order lunches through our pre-paid lunch program offered by Choice Lunch. These lunches can be ordered at www.choicelunch.com. Our school code is SMMS. Lunches from home should be brought in containers that are clearly labeled with your child’s name and which maintain the temperature at which the food is to be eaten. Due to time constraints, the staff cannot heat any lunches for children.

Sick Policy
Children may not attend school with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or when experiencing any highly contagious condition. Cooperation in this area is a must for protection of all the students. Please do not send your child to school until 24 hours after the last symptom. If your child shows any of these symptoms while at school we will contact a parent to promptly come pick up a sick child.

We are a private Montessori school based on the philosophy of freeing the child’s potential in a stimulating environment. One of the first Montessori schools in the United States, we are proud of our rich heritage and we stay true to the Montessori method. Our carefully prepared environment and wonderful teachers will allow your child to develop self-confidence and independence that inspires self-discipline and a love of learning which will remain throughout the child's life.
