Montessori Education in West Los Angeles

At Santa Monica Montessori School, our primary goal for the child is to cultivate their own natural desire to learn. This is approached two ways in the classroom. Each child is able to experience the excitement of learning through their own choice of lesson rather than being forced to do something. Secondly, we help the child shape their natural tools for learning, which can be used in future learning situations.

Dr. Montessori always emphasized that the hand is the chief teacher of the child. In order to learn how to concentrate, the best solution is to fix the attention of the child on a task performed by their hands. All equipment in a Montessori classroom allows a child to use their hands throughout the learning process. This tactile and kinesthetic system of learning permanently reinforces the skill to be learned. Muscular memory is a strong tool in the learning process.

Dear Families,

We hope you are enjoying your final days of summer and are gearing up for another great year.
Mark your calendars! Our First Day of School is on Tuesday, September 4th. School begins at
8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m.

Please familiarize yourself with the necessary completed forms and the school calendar. All
forms must be completed and returned to the school prior to your child’s first day of school.

Our first Parent Education Meeting will be at 9:00 on Wednesday, September 12th. We will
discuss new additions to the program, curriculum, and staff.

A back to school welcome letter with information regarding the upcoming year is attached. We
appreciate you taking time to read and follow the information in this letter in order to prepare
your child for the new school year.

Tuesday, September 4th - First day of school
Wednesday, September 5th - Back to School Night 3:00 - 4:30pm

Back to School Night
Parents, please join us on Wednesday, September 5th from 3:00-4:30 for Open House. An
informal parent meeting will follow from 5:00-6:00 where you will have the opportunity to
meet new and returning parents and staff, and learn general school information from Mrs.
Crisman and Dr. Sinjur.

School Hours
Monday - Friday
8:30 am - 12 pm (half day)
8:30 am - 3 pm (school day)
7:30 am - 6 pm (extended day)

Class starts promptly at 8:30 am every day. It is very important that all children arrive on time
and maintain a regular attendance schedule. Coming late or missing school hinders your child's
academic and social progress as well as disrupts the classroom. Absences, late starts, or early
pick-ups need to be reported to the office at 310-829-3551.

Signing In and Out
Every student needs to be signed in at the beginning of the day and signed out when he/she
leaves the school. The binders with the sign-in/sign-out sheets for every child can be found on
the sign-in/sign-out table to the right of the front desk. Licensing requires every parent to sign
in with a full signature that is clear and legible.

Saying Goodbye
Transitioning for a child can be difficult, especially if it is for the first time. We have found the
least painful way to say “goodbye”, for parents and children alike, is to give a warm hug and
assure your child that you will be back soon. Your good-bye should not exceed more than a few
minutes. The teachers will assist you by redirecting your child to an activity or classroom work.

Student Drop-Off
The driveway in front of the school may only be used for quick drop-off or pick-up of a student.
All cars should enter from Colorado Ave. and exit on 19th Street. For longer visits, please park
on the street. Do not park in the driveway in such a way that blocks other cars from entering.

The rear entrance in the alley is also a safe place for drop-off or pick-up. Every day from 8:00
am to 8:30 am and from 3:00 pm to 3:15 pm there will be a monitor attending the gate to
receive or release children. Please do not use the emergency exits because the front security
door and the rear door to the alley are the only ways to drop-off and pick-up students. All
parking spots behind the school building and the marked parking spots in the driveway are
reserved for teachers and staff.

Student Pick-Up
Please try and be prompt when picking up your child. When you arrive in the classroom, let
your child know that it is now time to leave. Give them a few minutes to complete their
present task and clean up after themselves, but do not let them start something new. To
expedite a smooth departure we ask for all adults not to linger in the playground area or to let
the child continue to play. If a longer enrollment is desired, please contact admissions to make
the arrangement.

Lunch
The students at Santa Monica Montessori School may choose to bring lunch from home or
order lunches through our pre-paid lunch program offered by Tot Pot. These lunches can be
ordered at www.totpot.boonli.com. Our school code is Westside12. Additional information
about setting up your Tot Pot account can be found in a separate document. Lunches from
home should be brought in containers that are clearly labeled with your child’s name and which
maintain the temperature at which the food is to be eaten. Due to time constraints the staff
cannot heat any lunches for children.

Sick Policy
Children may not attend school with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or when experiencing any
highly contagious condition. Cooperation in this area is a must for protection of all the
students. Please do not send your child to school until 24 hours after the last symptom. If your
child shows any of these symptoms while at school we will contact a parent to promptly come
pick up a sick child.

What to Bring on the First Day of School

  • All forms completed and tuition payment submitted
  • Lunch
  • A bag with extra change of clothes: 2 pairs of underwear, 2 pairs of socks, 2 pants/shorts, 2 shirts/sweaters, and diaper supplies (if necessary)
  • If your child naps: small blanket and a crib-sized sheet. No pillows, please!
  • Earthquake Kit
  • Please label everything!
  • Please do not allow your child to bring any toys, expensive clothes or jewelry to school. Santa Monica Montessori School cannot be held responsible for these items.
