Junior High

At the Secondary level, the Montessori School Teacher remains focused on the individual needs of each student. There are no curriculum requirements except those set by the State or college entrance exam requirements similar to what you would find at any private school.

Students also design contracts with the Teacher to guide their required work, to balance their general work, and to teach them to become responsible for their own time management and education.

The habits and skills, which a child develops in a Montessori classroom, become the basis for all future learning. They will help them to work more efficiently, to observe more carefully and to concentrate effectively. The children study pre-algebra, algebra, pre-geometry and geometry in mathematics. Extensive use of our computer room is employed using programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Front Page and use of the Internet. Creative writing skills are developed further and children are taught to write using the scientific method as well as the traditional styles. More in depth research projects are produced in the area of social studies and science. The children also participate in the interscholastic basketball and volleyball with other private schools in the area.

Every year we also have a Science Fair, an International Fair, a historical re-enactment, and an Art Show. Participating in the student council gives the student an opportunity to develop leadership qualities, and career counseling.

Participating and planning of school wide events are used to develop the child’s personality and social skills. Extensive field trips are planned, many cumulating in a week long excursion. Previous trips have included a Mexican cruise, San Francisco by train, a tour of Alaska and a visit to England.

Many parents inquire how their child will make the transfer into a traditional school. To facilitate the transfer, we begin to introduce homework and integrate some more traditional teaching styles into the classroom while continuing to follow the educational style of Maria Montessori.

We also offer dance, voice, piano, gymnastics, and a sports program with other private schools.
